Marijuana is a green or gray mixture of dried, shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. There are over 200 slang terms for marijuana including "pot," "herb," "weed," "boom," "Mary Jane," "gangster," and "chronic." It is usually smoked as a cigarette (called a joint or a nail) or in a pipe or bong. In recent years, it has appeared in blunts. These are cigars that they take off the tobacco and re-filled with pot, often in combination with another drug, such as crack. Some marijuana users also mix pot into foods or use it to brew tea.
The major active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). In 1988, it was discovered that the membranes of certain nerve cells contain protein receptors that bind THC.
Once securely in place, THC kicks off a series of cellular reactions that surely lead to the high that marijuana users experience when they smoke pot. The short-term marijuana's effects use include memory and learning problems; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate, anxiety and panic attacks.
The effects on the marijuana user depends on the strength or potency of the THC that the marijuana contains. THC potency has increased since the 1970s but has been about the same since the mid-1980s. The strength of the marijuana is measured by the amount of THC in test samples confiscated by law enforcement agencies.
Effects of cannabis
The effects of any substance (including cannabis) differ from person to person. It depends on several factors, such as an individual’s size, weight and health, how the drug is taken, how much is taken, whether the person is used to taking it and whether other drugs are taken.
Immediate effects
Small amounts of cannabis can have effects that last 2–4 hours after consumption. These effects include: relaxation and loss of inhibition, increased appetite, affected perception of colour, sound and other sensations, impaired coordination, affected thinking and memory.
Other usual immediate effects are increased heart rate, low blood pressure and reddened eyes.
Larger amounts of marijuana make the above effects stronger, and also tend to distort an individual’s perceptions.
Very large amounts of marijuana can cause: confusion, restlessness, feelings of excitement, hallucinations, anxiety or panic, or detachment from reality, decreased reaction time and paranoia.
Can you get addicted to marijuana?
Yes, you can. Certain individuals have a hard time quitting and have to seek treatment.
They might feel they need the substance, and get anxious when they don’t have any.
Certain individuals who use a lot of cannabis daily and then quit suddenly may have problems sleeping. They might get anxious, irritable or nervous without it. Or they might have an upset stomach or lose their appetite. These symptoms seldom last over a few days.
